FM 21-26 Map Reading and Land Navigation

This is U.S. Army Field Manual FM 21-26 titled "Map Reading and Land Navigation." The download is a high quality PDF file of the original manual, dated 7 May 1993. The manual was prepared by the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA, for training and reference purposes. The document has 176 pages including many illustrations. This version of the manual is an update to earlier versions of FM 21-26 that go back to World War II or earlier. It was superceded by a renumbered manual with the same title and very similar content: FM 3-25.26, Map Reading and Land Navigation, 20 July 2001.

From the Preface:

The purpose of this field manual is to provide a standardized source document for Armywide reference on map reading and land navigation. It applies to every soldier in the Army regardless of service branch, MOS, or rank. This manual contains both doctrine and training guidance on these subjects. Part One addresses map reading and Part Two, land navigation. The appendixes include a list of exportable training materials, a matrix of land navigation tasks, an introduction to orienteering, and a discussion of several devices that can assist the soldier in land navigation.
